can you compost wrapping paper?

brown · carbon paper & cardboard

Sometimes — plain matte wrapping paper composts, but foil, glitter, velvet-flocked, and plastic-coated wraps do not.

which bins can take it?

  • hot pile yes
  • cold pile yes
  • worm bin caution
  • bokashi no
  • tumbler yes
  • curbside caution
  • worm bin: Plain shredded wrap is fine in small amounts; the dye load is heavier than newsprint, so mix with plainer bedding.
  • curbside: Many programs ban wrapping paper outright because sorters can't tell coated from plain — check locally.

why?

The gift-wrap aisle mixes true paper with paper laminated to metallized film or polypropylene, and microbes digest only the fiber, leaving the plastic layer behind as sheet fragments. Glitter is worse — it's loose microplastic, and a single glittered sheet can salt an entire batch of finished compost with it.

how to prep it

  1. Scrunch-test first: paper that stays crumpled is usually plain; wrap that springs back open is coated
  2. Strip off tape, bows, and ribbon
  3. Shred or tear before adding

watch out for

  • Glitter never composts or recycles — glittered wrap is trash, full stop.
  • Foil and metallic wraps shed metallized plastic film that persists in soil.
  • Even compost-safe plain wrap is often better off recycled, if your local program accepts it.

often confused with

  • Gift tissue paper — Plain tissue is the easy one — uncoated, thin, and quick to break down in any pile.

quick answers

Can I compost wrapping paper with tape still on it?

Pick off the long runs of tape; the odd missed piece survives composting but can be screened or plucked from the finished product. Fiber-reinforced tape is the worst offender and worth hunting down.

Is heavily printed or dyed wrapping paper safe?

Water-based pigment prints are fine at pile scale. Skip metallic and neon inks, which can carry film layers and heavier colorant loads than ordinary printing.
