Succulent tissue is 90 to 95 percent water held in specialized storage cells, so a mass of it slumps into slime rather than composting cleanly. That same water lets detached leaves live for weeks and push out roots; laying a leaf on damp soil is the standard way to propagate jade, echeveria, and sedum. Sun-dried until they turn papery, the same cuttings behave like ordinary greens.

Why did my compost sprout succulents?
Because most of them propagate from a leaf or stem fragment alone, no roots required. Sedum and kalanchoe are the worst offenders, and kalanchoe grows tiny plantlets along its leaf margins that drop off and colonize the heap.
Can I compost the gravel top dressing that comes with succulents?
