can you compost particle board?

neutral · neither problematic & toxic

No — particle board is wood chips and flakes glued together with formaldehyde resin, and that glue has no business in soil.

which bins can take it?

  • hot pile no
  • cold pile no
  • worm bin no
  • bokashi no
  • tumbler no
  • curbside no

why?

The wood flakes themselves would rot happily; the binder is the deal-breaker. Panels run roughly 6-10% urea-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde resin by weight, so a wet offcut swells into a crumbling gray mush and releases formaldehyde as the bond fails rather than feeding microbes. Melamine facing, edge banding, and wax sizing then survive in the finished compost as plastic shards.

watch out for

  • Dust from cutting particle board is the same resin-loaded material in finer form — keep it out of the pile, out of animal bedding, and out of a mulch layer.
  • Flat-pack furniture is usually particle board under a printed plastic film, even when the label says 'wood' or 'engineered wood'.

what to do instead

Break panels down and put them in the trash or a construction-debris bin; resin-bonded board is rejected by most wood recyclers, and burning it in a stove or fire pit puts formaldehyde and resin smoke in the air.

often confused with

  • MDF — MDF is finer fiber with even more resin per pound — same verdict, denser dust, and it wicks water fast.
  • OSB / oriented strand board — Bigger flakes, waterproof phenolic glue, same answer: the adhesive is what keeps it out of a pile.

quick answers

Is it safe to burn particle board in a wood stove?

No. Extension and air-quality programs put engineered panels on the never-burn list alongside treated lumber, because the resins and any melamine facing produce fumes a home stove isn't designed to handle. The ash is not garden-safe either.

What about the untreated wood core of an old shelf?

If a board splits into long clean fibers and shows growth rings on the edge, it's real lumber and can go in the slow-decomposition pile. Particle board shows uniform speckled chips all the way through and crumbles rather than splitting.
