can you compost maple leaves?

brown · carbon yard & garden

Yes — maple leaves are the easiest leaf in the yard, thin enough to break down inside a single season.

which bins can take it?

  • hot pile yes
  • cold pile yes
  • worm bin yes
  • bokashi no
  • tumbler yes
  • curbside yes

why?

Maple carries less lignin and fewer tannins than oak or beech, so bacteria reach the leaf tissue directly instead of waiting on slower fungi. Sugar maple litter is also calcium-rich, which earthworms actively seek out, and that is part of why maple stands lose their leaf layer so fast. The trouble is physical rather than chemical: wet maple leaves glue together like papier-mache, and a six-inch drift turns into a slimy, airless sheet.

how to prep it

  1. Shred with a mower or leaf vacuum before piling
  2. Add no more than 3–4 inches at a time
  3. Work in straw or twigs if leaves are all you have

watch out for

  • Norway maple leaves are noticeably thicker and slower than sugar or red maple, and the tree is invasive across much of the Northeast — bag the winged seeds separately.
  • Tar spot's black blotches look alarming but are cosmetic, and raking the leaves into a pile actually lowers next spring's spore load.

often confused with

  • Oak Leaves — Oak runs roughly twice as slow as maple; mixing the two gives a pile both structure and speed.

quick answers

Should I mow maple leaves into the lawn instead of raking?

Mulch-mowing works whenever you can still see grass after the pass. Michigan State turf research found that mulching even heavy autumn leaf drop into the lawn each year did no harm to the grass and cut dandelion cover over time.

Are maple seeds a problem in compost?

They sprout. Samaras germinate readily in cool piles, so you get a carpet of seedlings wherever the compost lands. A heap that holds 130°F for a few days kills them, and hoeing off the seedlings handles the rest.
