why?
At roughly 7:1 carbon to nitrogen, poultry manure is far richer in nitrogen than a pile can use on its own, and much of that nitrogen is uric acid that converts to ammonia fast enough to gas off and scorch roots. Bury it in carbon and the same intensity drives pile temperature straight into the 130–150°F range where weed seeds and Salmonella die.

watch out for
- USDA organic rules give the useful home benchmark for raw manure: 120 days before harvesting a crop that touches soil, 90 days for anything else. Properly hot-composted manure is exempt from that wait.
- Fresh manure against stems or seedlings burns them — the ammonia and soluble salts pull water back out of plant tissue.
- Medicated feed and coop disinfectants pass through into the manure; skip the pile for a few days after treating birds.
