can you compost carpet?

neutral · neither problematic & toxic

No — carpet face fiber is nylon or polypropylene tufted into a plastic backing and glued with latex, wool rugs included.

which bins can take it?

  • hot pile no
  • cold pile no
  • worm bin no
  • bokashi no
  • tumbler no
  • curbside no

why?

The overwhelming majority of US broadloom is synthetic yarn stitched through a woven polypropylene primary backing and locked down with styrene-butadiene latex adhesive, then finished with a secondary backing on top of that. Stain and soil repellents were fluorinated PFAS chemistry for decades, so older carpet can carry those compounds into anything it touches. Sheet mulching with old carpet, once a popular trick, leaves that plastic scrim permanently woven into the top few inches of topsoil.

watch out for

  • Even a 100% wool rug is typically latex-backed and moth-proofed, so the fiber content on the label describes only the pile you walk on.
  • Carpet pad is usually rebond foam — shredded polyurethane scrap glued into a slab — which crumbles into stubborn colored crumbs that never leave a garden bed.

what to do instead

Check for a carpet-recycling drop-off first: several states run take-back programs funded by a per-square-yard fee at purchase, and installers often haul old carpet to those sites. Otherwise it goes out with bulky-waste pickup for the landfill.

often confused with

  • Wool — Loose wool and unbacked felt compost slowly but genuinely; a wool carpet's latex backing is what disqualifies the whole piece.

quick answers

Can I use old carpet as a weed barrier or for sheet mulching?

It was standard advice thirty years ago and has largely been abandoned, because the backing shreds into a plastic mat that tangles in tools and roots. Plain corrugated cardboard smothers weeds just as well and disappears in a season.

What about a jute-backed natural fiber rug?

A hand-woven wool, sisal, or jute rug with no latex or synthetic scrim can be cut up and composted, though the strips will still be recognizable a year in. Check the underside — if it looks like rubbery mesh, it isn't one of those.
