why?
Bio-based describes the feedstock, not the funeral: bio-PET and bio-PE are built from sugarcane yet are molecule-for-molecule identical to fossil plastic, and no compost system anywhere digests them. The genuinely compostable branch — PLA, and blends with PBAT — still needs sustained heat near 140°F to open its polymer chains to microbes. PHA is the rare exception, a bacterially grown polyester that degrades even in soil and seawater, but it remains a niche material.

- Look up the specific product's certification before choosing a bin — 'plant-based' on the label decides nothing
watch out for
- A bio-based bottle carrying a #1 or #2 resin code belongs in recycling, and putting it in compost contaminates the load.
- Certified compostable bioplastics in the recycling stream cause the mirror-image problem — the two systems don't forgive crossovers.

- Biodegradable Plastic — That's a claim about breakdown with no standard behind it; bioplastic is a claim about ingredients. A product can be either, both, or neither.

Is PHA different from PLA?
Meaningfully, yes. PHA is grown inside bacteria as an energy store, so soil and marine microbes recognize and eat it without industrial heat — it's the only common bioplastic with credible home and ambient breakdown. It's also expensive, which is why you rarely encounter it.
